Her teaching inspired confidence in me, and made me think that driving wasn’t so bad after all. If I made a mistake, she would calmly explain what I did wrong and suggest a way for me to improve. Sometimes it would be verbal, sometimes she would draw diagrams, and sometimes she would demonstrate the skill or technique herself. Equally important to learning is that she told me when I did something right or executed a driving skill well.
What was also helpful is that Ellen tailors her approach to fit your needs. She knew I had driving experience already, so she waited and watched to see what I knew and what I didn’t: if I did something that was different from how she taught it herself, she would give me the option to do it whichever way I felt the most comfortable and resulted in the safest driving practice.
Safety is Ellen’s main concern: as somebody who was nervous about driving, Ellen’s “safety first” approach put me at ease. From lane changes to left turns to highway driving and the dreaded backing in and parallel parking, Ellen models and teaches what it means to be a good citizen of the road.
Ellen is an excellent teacher for people young and old, from first-time drivers to drivers who are a bit rusty and want to brush up on their skills. She has a thorough knowledge of driving tests as well a tips for everyday going around town. I was also pleased by her knowledge of good places to practice in the lower mainland: in our lessons together we drove to Langley, UBC, downtown, all over the great Vancouver and Richmond area. It was great to learn and have fun as well!
